Mistletoe and win anybody?

Spurs v Chelsea - 22.12.19

I remember well November 5th 2006. Indeed it was one of the most fantastic days in recent Spurs history. It was a day we finally laid to rest the Premier League hoodoo of never having beaten Chelsea. Who was the Chelsea manager? None other than Jose Mourinho of course! Little did we dream that 13 years later the "Special One" would be our head coach.

Jose was the manager of Chelsea for the second time around on New Year's Day 2015 when we beat them 5-3! The fact of the matter is that since that wonderful day in 2006 (when Michael Dawson and Aaron Lennon scored our goals), Spurs have beaten Chelsea 5 more times at home in the Premier League. No longer can Chelsea fans call it "Three Point Lane", and of course since April 2018 even Stamford Bridge victories have not been beyond us!

After Chelsea lost 1-0 at home to Bournemouth last week, we knew that if we beat Wolves we could reclaim fourth place by beating Frank Lampard's Chelsea this Sunday. I personally have not been having a good run with my Premier League football predictions this season, but surely Spurs will have plenty of backers this weekend? Fourth for Christmas? That would be terrific!

Frank Lampard was announced as the Chelsea manager on 4th July this year, and when appointed he thought he would be constrained by a transfer embargo that was due to run into 2020, but now Chelsea have won an appeal, and can once again sign players in the forthcoming window. The ban - originally set to operate for two windows - was imposed by FIFA after no less than 150 rule breaches involving 69 Academy players over several seasons, but that punishment (and the fine) was halved by the Court of Arbitration for Sport earlier this month. The CAS found that the Blues "did violate" rules "related to the international transfer of minors" and "to the first registration of minors" but "for a significantly smaller number of players" amounting to "about a third of the violations found by Fifa".

The Cas verdict added: "In addition, the violations of other RSTP (Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players) rules were found to be less serious than those attributed to Chelsea by Fifa."

Chelsea anticipated the embargo in January when they signed the much admired USA International Christian Pulisic for £58 million from Borussia Dortmund. Pulisic was immediately loaned back to the German club, but has played a very full part for "the Blues" this season and opened his scoring account for the club with a "perfect" hat-trick in their 4-2 win at Burnley in October. Pulisic has scored three more club goals since. Chelsea famously lost the iconic Eden Hazard to Real Madrid in the summer, but they were able to secure the permanent signing of loanee Mateo Kovacic. Lampard has famously put his faith in youth and has been rewarded admirably with high scoring by Tammy Abraham and consistency from Mason Mount. Chelsea's form has taken a recent dive with only one win the last five Premier league games. They've lost two of their last three home games too!

Chelsea last came to Tottenham on January 4th 2017. Spurs won that game 2-0. Dele Alli scored both goals and ended a run of three consecutive games in which he scored twice. It wasn't our last home win against Chelsea though. After all, who could forget last year's magnificent 3-1 win at Wembley which included Son's run down the right flank which led to a goal leaving Jorginho and David Luiz in his wake!

I've been checking the records for games against Chelsea played during the festive season, and there have been a number of such occasions, including the very first league meeting between the two sides played at Stamford Bridge on 18th December, 1909. That game was won by Chelsea (2-1), as was a game at White Hart Lane on 27th December 1913 (also 2-1) when former Spurs man Vivian Woodward scored one of Chelsea's goals. Woodward had scored Spurs' very first league goal against Wolves in 1908.

The most recent festive meeting was on this date in 2011 (22nd December) when the game was drawn 1-1. Spurs took the lead through Adebayor but Daniel Sturridge scored a 23rd minute equaliser. Sturridge is now 30 and plays in Turkey for Trabzonspor. Chelsea's manager on that occasion was Andre Villas-Boas, who didn't make it to the end of the 2011-12 season but came to Spurs the following summer. With Roberto di Matteo stepping in, the "Blues" did win that season's FA Cup and of course the Champions League - much to our pain. Incidentally that penalty shoot-out win came against Bayern Munich who Chelsea will face in the Champions League round of 16 in the New Year.

New Year's Day 2015 was a very happy occasion for Spurs fans, of course! I did manage to watch that game on TV but I was very sad that I felt too ill to travel. I had an ultra-cheap return train ride booked too! Jose Mourinho didn't last as Chelsea boss all the way through 2015.

Spurs are at risk of conceding their 100th Premier League goal against Chelsea this season, if not in this game. That is a worse record than against any other Premier League team in terms of goals against, but not in terms of points, as we have gained two less (38) in our first 55 Premier League games against Manchester United.

I do not anticipagte the Spurs injury situation changing, and I do anticipate the same team starting as did at Molineux. I am treading boldly, predicting a 2-1 Spurs win. May the force be with us. Mistletoe and win anybody?

Match referee Anthony Taylor gets lots of big games these days. He was in charge of our game at Anfield in October. Three of his last four appointments in the middle have been Juventus v Atletico Madrid, the Manchester Derby and Lyon v Leipzig.

Did you know? - There are very few occasions when Spurs have won a league "Double" over Chelsea, and the last occasion I have found occurred in the 1970-71 season. Chelsea were the FA Cup holders, and would go on to win the European Cup-Winners' Cup against Real Madrid at the end of that season. However, in November 1970 we beat the "Blues" 2-0 at Stamford Bridge with late goals scored by Alan Mullery and Jimmy Pearce. Over 61,000 watched that game. 49,292 were at The Lane in March 1971 when we won 2-1. Former Spur Keith Weller gave Chelsea a 47th minute lead, but Peters (69) and Chivers (73) gave us the win. We finished in third place that season, behind a team whose name escapes me and Leeds United.
