Chelsea still have their eyes on Europe
"The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It is about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out to beat the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom." - Danny Blanchflower
Despite their very mixed season, Chelsea (who like Spurs still have five games to play) have their eyes on a place in Europe. The Champions League (which they have won twice) is beyond them, but a European place (perhaps the Conference League) is within their reach. Spurs still have hopes for The Champions League, but realistically, The Europa League is their destiny. There is plenty of work to be done, and despite the antecedents of their coach, Chelsea and their fans will be as keen as ever to hamper our chances. It is still hard to think of Mauricio Pochettino being in charge at Chelsea.
Our visit to Stamford Bridge (7.30pm Thursday - SKY SPORTS) had to be re-scheduled after Chelsea's success in reaching the Carabao Cup Final. (They lost 1-0 to Liverpool)
This match was originally scheduled to be played on the 16th anniversary of our League Cup win in 2008. Since then Chelsea have won 16 trophies, compared to our zero. In those years Chelsea have won 18 games against us in all competitions, compared to our 8 wins. It's easy to remember our one win at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. That was six years ago on April Fools' Day 2018 when Dele Alli (in his pomp) scored two lovely second half goals. Chelsea remain our most difficult opponents.
Chelsea's epic 4-4 draw at home to Manchester City in November was their first such game since their meeting with Spurs in March 2008.
The result of our home game this season does not, of course, tell the story of an incredible night at Tottenham, who played 83 minutes (including added time) with 10 men, and 44 minutes (including added time) with 9 men, as a result of the sendings-off of Romero and Udogie respectively. The remaining 9 heroes almost held or regained a draw until succumbing to Jackson's late hat-trick. It's a match that will live long in the memory, as does "The Battle of Stamford Bridge" in May 2016 when Chelsea levelled the score with two second-half goals to finally put paid to our hopes of a Premier League title.
Our first half goals had been scored by Harry Kane and Heung-min Son. Son's goal was his seventh for the club. He now has 161 Spurs goals to his name. Kane's goal was the 64th of his club career and his 25th league goal of that season.
Harry scored 280 goals for Spurs and this season has scored 43 goals in 43 games for Bayern Munich (so far). One of the players in our all-time top scorers' list overtaken by Harry Kane was Bobby Smith who was a member of Chelsea's 1955 League Championship winning squad before he won the double with Spurs. Bobby Smith overtook George Hunt to become our top scorer before he in turn was overtaken by another Chelsea and Tottenham player - the great Jimmy Greaves. Bobby Smith's third place on 208 goals is secure for a long time to come.
Cole Palmer, signed by Chelsea from Manchester City last summer for £40 (+ add-ons) has had a sensational season for Chelsea, scoring 20 Premier League goals which include a first senior hat-trick in the 4-3 win over Manchester United. In that game, Palmer scored two goals in the 10th and 11th minutes of added time, thus scoring the new record latest winning goal. You'll remember Steven Bergwijn's late winning goals at Leicester in January, 2022. Palmer's hat-trick ended a run of seven goals in four consecutive games for Chelsea.
Palmer, who will be 22 next Monday, was signed from Manchester City last summer and is having a sensational season. He followed his hat-trick with four goals against Everton to draw level with top scorer Erling Haaland and to become the first Chelsea player to score in 7 consecutive Premier League home games.
Palmer is just the second Chelsea player to score a hat-trick in back-to-back home appearances in the Premier League after Didier Drogba in May/August 2010.
In the Manchester United game The Blues became the first team in Premier League history to both score 2+ goals and concede 2+ goals in six consecutive matches in all competitions since Chelsea themselves back in November/December 1989.
Mauricio Pochettino has suffered a new blow in his bid to solidify his position as Chelsea head coach with midfielder Enzo Fernandez ruled out for the rest of the season.
Fernandez has undergone surgery on a groin injury that will rule him out of Chelsea's final six games, which started away at Aston Villa last Saturday night.
Timo Werner, who was forced off after 31 minutes against Arsenal will miss the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury. Ange Postecoglou has also confirmed that Ben Davies will also miss our remaining games due to an ankle injury. Oliver Skipp is again available, but I don't see him above Sarr, Bissouma, Bentancur or Hojbjerg in the Spurss pecking order. I suspect Emerson Royal will step in at left back. My not too optimistic prediction is for a 2-2 draw.
On the day Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 6-1 in their League Cup semi-final second leg, they paid homage to Tommy Baldwin who died on January 22nd, aged 78. Baldwin was a member of Chelsea's 1967 FA Cup Final side which lost to Spurs. He had transferred to Chelsea from Arsenal in a move which took George Graham in the other direction.
Spurs Double Legend Terry Medwin, who died today (May 1st) aged 91, made his Spurs debut on my birthday (18th August) in 1956 and his eleventh game was at Stamford Bridge when Spurs won 4-2. George Robb opened the scoring and Alfie Stokes scored a hat-trick, all in the first half. Bobby Smith was in the Spurs side, but had previously played and scored againnst his former team.
Rob Jones has been appointed to referee a Spurs game for the fifth time this season and only the seventh time in all. Mr. Jones has yet to see us win as referee this season. We drew at Brentford and away to Arsenal, and lost at home to Aston Villa and (miserably) away to Fulham in March.
